The safety & security of the students & staff of SACU is our foremost concern. Recently we heard from Ivan with some unsettling concerns that we felt must be brought to the attention of our  Sponsors.  Naayla Secondary School, 10 miles from SACU had 2 men cut through their chain link fence, kill 2 guards and make off with an amount of cash and computer equipment.  Schools with shelters are required to have guards on their grounds to ensure the safety of the resident students, staff and property. Later that evening, another school was broken into. As well, there have been many fires in dormitories recently, showing a sharp increase in risk.  This disturbs us greatly and we realize through conversations with Ivan, who is greatly distressed by the situation, that we have a critical situation at hand. Despite being in a rural area, SACU is a well-known and highly regarded school, which may make us more at risk.

SACU school grounds has 70%  of the perimeter enclosed by an 8’ brick fence which was recently constructed. We feel pressed to finish the fence as we have 30 students living on-site & 10 staff persons on-site in the evenings, as well as over 400 students and staff during the school days. They are our greatest concern and safety measures must be our immediate focus. We have 2 guards but without any fencing on part of our property, there is very little they can do to stop would-be thieves from entering our school grounds.

The committee has agreed that our only option is to start building the fence that would enclose the farm area as well as the school buildings for a total of 554 feet at a cost of $12,000. Refer to the diagram for a better understanding of the size and property lines of SACU. The inclusion of the farm area is not essential to the security of the students but the animals are at risk of being stolen as well.

The funds donated to this emergency safety project will be 100% tax-deductible as this is considered a necessity for school safety guidelines. We have the funds to start this project but will certainly need support to complete the security fencing.
