The Ugandan government shut down all schools in March after only 8 weeks of school. The students in P7, S3 & S4 must pass national exams to be promoted from Primary to High School, S3 to S4 & S4 students to higher education. The start date for return was Oct 15th. In order to open schools we were required to purchase supplementary equipment (masks, wash stations, thermometers, etc) to meet Safe Operating Procedures (SOP’s) defined by the Government. Student spacing in classes was strictly defined. Schools needed to have the ability to restrict access to their property for proper inspection of anyone entering the property. With funds from supporters, we were able to have built a 350 foot fence with gates along the edge of the SACU school property.
A Government inspector approved SACU to begin classes on Oct 15. We had everything in place as required and SACU was one of only 3 schools in the area that were granted the permission to open!
Our two S4 students returned to St Julian where attendance is limited to S4 only. Our S3 students are coming to class at SACU to continue their studies online as none of them have a home environment appropriate for learning. In order to offer online learning, we were required to purchase laptop computers, a router and internet support to access. A teacher to familiarize them with computers was also necessary as this was a first for all of them. The S1 & S2 students at our neighbouring Quality High School will be using workbooks to keep their studies up and their minds sharp.
SACU continues to keep our excellent teaching staff in place and they will be assisting with the students who will be attending school. SACU is proud of our teaching staff and it was decided to continue their pay during this shutdown. Educating our students is paramount to us and we are committed to our Sponsors to uphold a high level of education for our children.
